The Big Green hit the road yet again to take on Berkshire on Saturday afternoon. Looking to rebound from a less than stellar performance on Wednesday, Deerfield was determined to play hard from the drop of the puck. An excellent first shift set the tone for the game, and our aggressive forecheck pinned Berkshire in their zone on more than one occasion. The home team got on the board first, however, as a lapse in our defensive zone coverage led to a shot from the point that sailed past a screened Jordan Manning ’19. Our offense kept pressing, and Mae Emerson ’19 tied the score with a shot from the slot, set up by nice work by Raegan Hill ’19 and Taylor Morash ’16, who both earned assists on the play. The second period was a back and forth affair, but despite coming close many times, including a Meghan Halloran ’17 shot off of the crossbar, we could not find the go-ahead goal. In the third period our power play was given an opportunity, and the unit of Erin DeMarco ’19, Katherine Goguen ’16, Brenna Hoar ’18, Emerson, and Mary Edmonds ’19 quickly went to work. They moved the puck well and got off several shots before a DeMarco shot from the point was tipped in by Edmonds for the 2-1 lead. Intense pressure all over the ice never allowed Berkshire to set up offensively in the final minutes, and we skated away with a well-deserved 2-1 victory. Manning played well in goal with 23 saves, and we put 29 shots on the Berkshire net. We have a big week coming up with three games, starting with Cushing at home on Wednesday afternoon. Many thanks to the Williams family for the pizza, drinks, fruit, and treats after the game!
