Deerfield hit the road early Sunday morning to take on a very good Taft squad. We got off to a slow start, and fell victim to several errors that we had eliminated from our play lately, like failing to pick up adequately on the back check and not stepping up to take the body. We thus dug ourselves into a 2-0 hole halfway through the first period, but, to the team’s credit, we were able to rally and play a much better rest of the game. The second period was particularly strong, as we earned several power play opportunities that generated good chances. We finally got on the board when Katherine Goguen ’16 sent a well placed puck toward the net that Brenna Hoar ’18 was able to deflect into the goal, and so we went into the third period down 2-1. The final frame was fairly even, with both teams working hard despite having played tough games the day before. Taft was able to extend their lead on a power play when a shot from the top of the circle found its way past Jordan Manning ’19 (15 saves), but the Big Green continued to press. Finally, with 30 seconds left, on the power play and with the goalie on the bench for an extra attacker, Deirdre Mullowney ’19 fired home our second goal of the game, with the assist going to Mary Edmonds ’19. Taft won the ensuing faceoff , however, and ended our hopes of a comeback with a quick goal. We worked hard today, but could not quite put all of the pieces together. We will look to rebound on Wednesday against a tough Williston team. Many thanks to the Edmonds family for the pizza, drinks and other treats after the game!
