Boys’ thirds squash made its season debut on Wednesday against a familiar foe, Eaglebrook School. The Brookies are always a tough squad, and this year was no exception.
The odd-numbered players went out first, and bad luck sent in almost immediately. Although every game was competitive, we managed to win only a single game at the 1, 3, 5, and 7 positions, which clinched the match for Eaglebrook. Although our 2, 4, and 6 players gave their best effort (Alex Kaminsky took a 2-1 lead before falling in 5), we came up short in those three matches as well, which resulted in a 7-0 final score.
The exhibition crew found much better luck, finishing with a .500 record on the day. Protik dug deep after a rocky start to come away with a five-game win at #11, while Joseph overcame some untimely missed serves to squeak out a fifth-game win of his own. The final match of the day featured Alex Smith at #10. In front of a crowd of close to 30 people, Alex kept his cool after a loss in the fourth game, and needed every inch of his reach to hustle his way to our third five-game win of the day.
Our players acquitted themselves well today, especially in light of the fact that almost everyone was making their career debut. We look forward to settling into a practice routine, and we hope to fare better against Eaglebrook in our January rematch.
