In an unusually physical game, Deerfield got outworked and outhustled by a strong St. Paul’s team for two periods, before finally deciding the fight back in the final frame. Special teams took over the game from the very beginning, with both teams spending lots of time in the penalty box. A strong SPS penalty kill, and rushed decisions on our part, never allowed our power play to gain momentum, and we gave up a power play goal in the first period, and then two others in the second. Despite finding ourselves down 3-0 heading into the third, we rallied and worked hard to generate chances, with Mae Emerson ’19 and Mary Edmonds ’19 nearly finding the back of the net. However, the SPS goalie was up to the task, and we were never able to work our way back into the game. Strong play by goalie Liv Mikesell ’20 kept us within reach until we found our legs in the third. We will look to play a complete game at our tournament this weekend, kicking off Friday morning in the Barn.
