The JV Road Warriors headed to Winchendon for a Wednesday contest and came out on top with a 6-1 victory. The first period saw quite a few chances for the Deerfield squad, but resulted in only one goal on a deft move by Kevin Danforth ’18, who waited for the goalie to commit before shifting to his backhand and sliding one in. That momentum was quickly squelched by the goon line, which took a five-minute major penalty. While their team-leading PIMs might attract positive attention from the Wheeling Nailers or the Kalamazoo Wings, they won’t cut it for the green and white. Rather than harp on the obvious that it is never better to play a man down, no one panicked in the locker room after the first period. Instead, Deerfield quickly scored five goals early in the second period, aided by its huge squad that could role out fresh players against Winchendon’s fewer numbers. Two goals by Alex Weinman (“I just doubled my total from last year, coach”), one by Nicky Hay (one less than promised – we’ll talk, Nicky), one by Punisa Lekovic, and one by Jake Presnal accounted for the 5-goal burst. The game settled into a humdrum affair after that, with the goon line picking up another penalty for good measure and the players lobbying heavily for Village Pizza in between the second and third periods. Fortunately for the squad, Mr. Wozniakewicz was more than willing to detour the green machine through Greenfield and Coach “The Mayor” Emerson’s long-standing relationship with the good folks at the Village ensured we could put eight pizzas “on the tab.” While the players retreat to hardcore conditioning over the break, the coaches will scour western New England for some additional post-break games. Happy Holidays to all!
