Deerfield hit the road again today to take on an undefeated Andover squad. We were determined to play a full forty-five minutes of hockey, and looked to play hard and smart from the drop of the puck. The first period was a back-and-forth affair, with two good teams going at each other in all three zones. Andover got on the board first, as quick puck movement dragged us out of position and left one of their dangerous forwards alone at the top of the circle; she made no mistake in sniping the puck top corner. There is no quit in our team, however, and we quickly tied the score when Isabel Perry ’16 stole the puck off of a strong forecheck, and quickly found Jenna Greenbaum ’17 in front of the net who put the puck into the back of the net. Perry was not done there, as she got a goal of her own before the end of the period, intercepting a pass on the penalty kill, walking in alone, and roofing the puck top corner. The team was energized heading into the second period, but we came out a little tentative and worried about making a mistake that would cost us a goal. Andover took advantage of our nervousness, earning more of the offensive possession and finally tying the score on a well-executed power play. Both teams would have excellent scoring chances in the middle frame, but we entered the final fifteen minutes tied at 2. Settling our nerves in between periods, the Big Green came out hard in the third, earning a few power play opportunities that nearly resulted in the go-ahead goal. Both goalies came up with big saves, however, and the overtime period did nothing to break the deadlock. We had to settle for the tie, but were very proud with our execution, effort, and heart. Meghan Halloran ’17 was a force all over the ice this afternoon, and Emily Yue ’16 had her best game of the season in goal with 25 saves. A great team effort, and another big step forward for this young team as we continue to gel and come together. Next up is NEWHL at home on Wednesday night. Many thanks to the Mannings for the pasta, meatballs, drinks, fruit, veggies, and desserts after the game!
