The Big Green made the long trip to Exeter today, and came away with a hard-fought 3-2 victory. Deerfield came out skating hard, with all three lines moving the puck well in the offensive zone, and our defensemen did a great job of jumping into the play and shutting down rushes in the neutral zone. There were some tense moments in our zone too, however, and Exeter got on the board first early in the second period off of a nice deflection in front of the net. We responded quickly, as Jenna Greenbaum ’17 used her strength and speed to power through the defense and slip the puck through the Exeter goalie to tie the game 1-1. We then took the lead a few minutes later, as we buzzed around the Exeter zone until hard work from Brenna Hoar ’18 popped the puck out to Mary Edmonds ’19, who buried it into the back of the net. Exeter was able to pull even when a dribbling puck somehow eluded Emily Yue ’16 (who played very well, making 18 saves), but Meghan Halloran ’17 put the visitors ahead for good when she streaked down the left side of the nice and sniped the puck top corner 13 seconds into the third period. Despite several goalmouth scrambles, and a chaotic final minute, Deerfield was able to hang on for the well-deserved team win. Next up is a game against rival Choate at home on Wednesday afternoon. Many thanks to the O’Briens for the pizza, salad, brownies and cupcakes after the game!
