Toby ’79 passed away yesterday morning with his wife Becca, his 4 boys and his brother Seth by his side. Over the weekend, he came down with another lung infection; it came on quickly and prompted a steep decline. Thankfully, all his boys were able to get home by early Wednesday morning and, as said, they were all with him and he was surrounded by those he loved most in his final hours. I’m heartbroken, as I know you are too.
One of Toby’s and my college buddies so aptly captured Toby with the following late last night: “A quintessential New England man, that Toby Brewster. Stoic, wry, self-effacing. No grand gestures; never a false note. A broad, perceptive mind and an open, generous heart…” I would simply add that he was the kindest person… not a mean or disingenuous bone in his body… and that he had the most endearing impish, mischievous smile ever! The world has lost one of the very best.
Many of you reached out to Toby over the past weeks, and the outpouring of support was so appreciated; it truly warmed Toby’s heart. The initial flood of emails and letters was such that his wife rationed them and thus spread your love and support over time; it was part of what sustained Toby. As you can well imagine, his family is overwhelmed right now, so I would respectfully suggest that we all hold off on further emails to his wife at this point. I will, of course, share information about any arrangements, memorial service, suggested memorial donations, etc., if and as I receive it.
Lastly, for those interested, I’ve attached a few photos I happen to have handy. None from Deerfield, unfortunately, but the earliest is not far removed from DA when Toby and I were college freshman roommates… and check out all of that hair!
Love to you all, raise a glass to our beloved Toby, and stay happy and healthy… Eric J. Sachsse ’79
