While serving as Deerfield’s first Planned Giving Officer (’83—91’), it was my distinct privilege to visit with alumni and some parents from the first 40 years of Frank L. Boyden’s (FLB) head-mastership. When asked to recall their favorite memories of FLB and their time at the Academy, I was treated to some of the most wonderful and astonishing stories that give insight into how Deerfield became renowned for building character in boys. Pretty clearly, FLB felt that it is not what you say, but what you do that has lasting impact your charges. Without much embellish-ment, here are some of the more interesting anecdotes burned into my brain forever…..
