In Memoriam-Peter Schoff ’55

Sadly, we have been informed of a second passing in this column. Mike Grant reports that our classmate, Peter Schoff, “had a heart attack in London where he lived since the 80’s, and died on March 13th. At Deerfield he was nick-named ‘The Beak’ and was always enthusiastic, mischievous, creative and persistently up-beat. A career Ad-man, Peter opened Europe for Forbes Magazine and later went on to developing his own creation, Red Herring. Having retired in 2003, he and Sam, his second wife stayed in his adopted country, which they loved.” Peter’s brother, Jim Schoff ’51, relates “after his days at Forbes in NY Pete made a life for himself in London, developing Forbes and subsequently Red Herring, internationally, while all the time refining his fly fishing skills on the chalk streams of England. There was no place else he’d rather be.” A funeral service for Peter was held in New York City on Thursday, April 18.

SCHOFF–Peter M., 75. Started his publishing career at The New York Times and left in 1969 moved to Forbes Magazine where he stayed for 30 years. In 1982 transferred to Forbes London and became Vice President of International Advertising Sales. Left Forbes in 2000 and joined Red Herring and retired 2003. He has left an older brother James S. Schoff, daughter Hilary and Son Merritt from a previous marriage and his beloved wife Sam in London. All enquiries and correspondence to J.J. There are no membership fees or dues for members of the Deerfield family, but Deerfield does ask for assistance in a few areas. First of all, in order for Deerfield to have the most up-to-date records possible, we encourage members to keep us apprised of their current contact info. Alumni are also urged to direct all concerns and suggestions regarding Deerfield’s operations through the Executive Committee, the governing body of the Alumni Association. The committee acts as the voice of the alumni body, and works closely with the school administration. In order to keep tuition affordable and the quality of a Deerfield education at its highest, the Academy depends upon the continuing support of alumni and their families. This support can take the form of annual or capital gifts, or time spent volunteering on behalf of Deerfield.

There are Deerfield Clubs in many major American cities. Please visit here for more information on specific clubs and their sponsored events.
