Charlie McSpadden ’06 Update

Hello Deerfield!

I have had an exhilarating and exhausting year and a half in the film industry, working on the set and in the production office of four feature films made in New York City. I began on the Whit Stillman film “Damsels in Distress”—his first in 13 years, and in which I have a brief cameo—followed by the Steve McQueen sex-addiction drama “Shame” which garnered awards and praise for its stars Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan. I then worked on the pre-production of Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby”, for which I retrieved my trusty copy of the Fitzgerald classic, replete with notes from Ms. Buron’s junior year English class. During a rehearsal one day, having just come from my 5th Year Reunion weekend, I bonded with lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio over his “The Departed” character’s Deerfield heritage. Finally, this past fall I worked on Stuart Blumberg’s “Thanks for Sharing”, another addiction narrative, which featured Mark Ruffalo, Tim Robbins and Gwyneth Paltrow. I recently wrote an article for the Duke magazine about my experiences which you can read here: I have been blessed with great opportunities thus far and eagerly await future projects. Hope all is well in the valley!

There are no membership fees or dues for members of the Deerfield family, but Deerfield does ask for assistance in a few areas. First of all, in order for Deerfield to have the most up-to-date records possible, we encourage members to keep us apprised of their current contact info. Alumni are also urged to direct all concerns and suggestions regarding Deerfield’s operations through the Executive Committee, the governing body of the Alumni Association. The committee acts as the voice of the alumni body, and works closely with the school administration. In order to keep tuition affordable and the quality of a Deerfield education at its highest, the Academy depends upon the continuing support of alumni and their families. This support can take the form of annual or capital gifts, or time spent volunteering on behalf of Deerfield.

There are Deerfield Clubs in many major American cities. Please visit here for more information on specific clubs and their sponsored events.

Of course! Be sure to read the latest issue of From Albany Road in your email’s in-box for current news of what is happening on campus.
