Business leader and philanthropist Alan Hassenfeld ’66 was awarded Deerfield’s Heritage Award on Wednesday, November 29 at School Meeting.
Hassenfeld served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of his family’s multi-billion-dollar toy company Hasbro, Inc. He established the Hassenfeld Family Innovation Center at Brandeis University, and served on the Dean’s Council of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and the Board of Directors of the Brown University medical school. He is a Director of the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island, and a former Chairman of the Right Now! Coalition. Hassenfeld is active in supporting, and raising awareness about, many causes, including children’s safety issues, the empowerment of women in developing countries, education, gun control, workers’ rights, and political reform in the United States and abroad.
The Heritage Award is presented annually to a Deerfield alumnus or alumna whose professional and personal achievements represent a special contribution to the betterment of society. Past recipients include: John Ashbery ’45, Frederick Barton ’67, Kerry Emanuel ’73, Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. ’52, Hugh Hardy ’50, and Budd Schulberg ’32.
