Deerfield has special programs and awards outside of the regular programs and projects.
David Workman Grants
These grants range in value of $200 to $1,000, and are awarded to an unspecified number of returning students. It is anticipated that David Workman Fellows will initiate service projects in their hometowns and/or participate in approved national or international service programs.
Application in March.
The Charles Piper Cost Award
This $2,500 award is available to one Deerfield Academy student. The award attempts to provide some remuneration to a Deerfield student who chooses to spend all or most of a summer in a volunteer activity. It is to be given “to that student who, upon application, demonstrates a sincere desire to work in a volunteer capacity for a significant portion of the summer in a position which best suggests a commitment to help his fellow man, a quality which will long be remembered as an important ingredient in the personality of Charles Piper Cost ’83.”
There is no separate application for the Charles Piper Cost Award.
Cambiando Vidas is a house-building service trip to the Dominican Republic that immerses the student in the grueling work of construction site and fascinating DR culture. Led by Sheryl Cabral during the second week of June, the trip promises not only to change the lives of those who it builds houses for, but also the lives of the participants.
India Service Trip
India service trip is a summer trip that takes Deerfield students to Calcutta and Ladakh, teaching high schoolers in India English. The project was developed by Allison Gruneich ’13 with the help of Associate Head of School Martha Lyman.
