Ivan ’28 describes his tour of the United States Capitol. Overall, I came out satisfied, and grateful to see the Capitol in action. It is an important government structure, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who is planning to visit DC!
On the morning of February 9th, our group went to tour the United States Capitol. This building is the heart of the US government and the place where Congress meets to approve the nation’s laws. Our tour started in the Visitor Center, and we made our way to the Crypt from there. It is right below the famous Rotunda to serve as structural support, and it was supposed to be an entrance to George Washington’s tomb! Around the Crypt are statues of different American people, which have been chosen by different states to be displayed there.
After that, we made our way to the old Supreme Court, where we saw the famous gold-plated clock and got to see the court in its 1810 condition.
Of course, the main attraction of the Capitol is the Rotunda. It features beautiful artwork, like the famous Apotheosis of Washington, Landing of Columbus, Embarkation of the Pilgrims, and many more. It serves as an important space for ceremonial events and art exhibition.
Finally, we got to visit the House Chamber. After passing through a strict layer of security, we got to see an active session. Each congressman had five minutes to speak, and then they switched. There weren’t a lot of them, as they are not required to attend the session every day, but it was still interesting to watch.
Overall, I came out satisfied, and grateful to see the Capitol in action. It is an important government structure, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who is planning to visit DC!
