South Dakota #5: Wind Cave and Custer National Park

After visiting Wind Cave and a 20 mile bike ride, West ’29 enjoys a dip in a beautiful lake and the best dinner so far!

Today we had an early wake up at 6:30 am, after a couple games of manhunt the night before. We ate breakfast, packed our bags, and loaded into the bus to drive towards Wind Cave National Park.  As we arrived we were greeted and introduced to our tour guide, before we headed into Wind Cave. Going into the cave we learned about the history and background of the cave. We were told a story about the natives and how their souls originally stayed in Wind Cave while they waited for their god to tell them that the earth was ready to live on, which was very interesting.

After the tour, we headed back to the cabins to regroup and then headed to where we would start our 20 mile bike ride. We biked all the way to a park which was near Custer National Park. Then we got in the van and drove 30 minutes to our camp ground and set up our tents. After we finished setting up camp, we jumped into the beautiful lake that is right next to our camp. Although it was pretty cold, it was a perfect refresher from our long bike ride. We spotted a huge rainbow trout and got a little too close to some Canada geese. After some fun in the lake, we started to prepare dinner.  Some of us chopped vegetables and others cooked the beef or made the sauce for the pasta. Tonight’s dinner was the best dinner of the trip in my opinion! Now, we are going to have fun around a campfire to finish the night off.
