World cup 2026 trip

Exploring Jordan's National Identity Through Competitive Sports

Deerfield Academy is pleased to offer a unique, faculty-led student travel experience centered on Jordan’s historic first qualification for the FIFA World Cup. This opportunity will bring a small group of students to Dallas, TX, to attend the Jordan vs. Argentina World Cup match,  while participating in a thoughtfully designed program that combines cultural, linguistic, and educational exploration.

This experience is intentionally designed as more than a sporting event. It emphasizes learning through place, conversation, and reflection, aligning with Deerfield’s commitment to global citizenship and thoughtful engagement. As part of match preparation, students will also learn traditional Jordanian chants and engage respectfully with the broader fan community, experiencing how language, music, dance, and collective expression shape sporting culture. Planned programming also includes visits to Southern Methodist University, the George W. Bush Presidential Library, Arab American cultural organizations, and locally owned Arabic restaurants.

Program Goals

  • To contextualize Jordan’s historic World Cup qualification within broader social, cultural, and global frameworks
  • To provide students with meaningful exposure to the Arabic language and Arab culture
  • To use a major global sporting event as a lens for examining questions of identity, belonging, and national representation
  • To help students practice attentive listening and thoughtful engagement with perspectives different from their own

The program will also include meals and conversations in Arabic spaces, including a group dinner at Khashooga, a Jordanian restaurant. In advance of the match, students will spend time with the Jordanian fan community in the fan base tent, learning traditional music, chants, and the dabke dance as a way to understand how collective expression, language, and identity come together in sporting culture.
