experimentory_emc2_800x800One of the beauties of boarding school is the way all parts of life intersect.

The Experimentory has a motto: “The Experimentory is Maximizing your Creativity and Character,” or “E = MC2” for short. This is the vision of what we hope our summer community will be: a safe place to take creative risks and strive to be our best selves. If we’re doing this right, this vision will be expressed in all we do. (For more on our motto, click here.)

For this reason, we aim to strike a good work-life balance and consider non-academic time just as important as our cluster work. We schedule open-ended free time in the afternoons and evenings; we plan casual gatherings like our annual dance and weekend picnics; and we have structured co-curriculars, field trips, and sit-down meals.

Life at the Experimentory

Course Clusters

Experimentory classes come in interdisciplinary pairs we call “course clusters.” Each student takes two – one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Visit our Clusters page for more details.

Free time is an opportunity to recharge in whatever way suits you: reading in the Dorm, a pickup soccer game in the Fields, ice cream over a game of cards in the Greer Cafe – or a little bit of all three.

All X Meeting

Students, teachers, and staff – everyone in the program – gathers once a week for an All X Meeting. It’s a time to discuss program themes, show off our talents, and have fun.

Meals in the Dining Hall

Remember to pack your appetite! Our Dining Hall provides some delicious fare three times daily. Plus our lunches carry on the Deerfield Academy sit down meal tradition.

Co-curricular Activities

The daily co-curricular period is a chance to enjoy a favorite past time or try a new one on for size. These change year-to-year — and even week-to-week — but past co-curriculars have included squash, dance, hiking, computer coding, ultimate Frisbee, baking, and much more.

Communications Class

Effective communication is the only way to translate your raw imagination into a shared idea and plan. Communication class will give you the essential tools needed to progress from one to the other.

Evening studio time is where things really come together: use a friend’s feedback to finish your jingle; rework your building design to get that extra dining space; or record strange noises to use as theater sound effects.

Dorm Time

Dorms aren’t just the place you sleep: your evenings there include snacks, impromptu dance parties, birthday celebrations, and time to reflect on all you learned and experienced during the day.

Field Trips

Deerfield is a great place to live and learn, but who doesn’t love to explore off campus? We take advantage of our historic New England locale with trips to visit Six Flags, tour Boston, climb a ropes course, whitewater raft down the Deerfield River, and more!
