Summer CSGC Grant Update: Empowering Women in Business Endeavors through Hair-Care

Tamutenda ’26 is leading a braiding workshop in partnership with Dress For Success, empowering women in her community by teaching haircare techniques that build confidence, foster connection, and promote self-sufficiency.
Similarly, I received a grant award from the CSGC last summer. I used the acquired funds to host a braiding workshop. The workshop was a major success, and the organization I partnered with, the Northern New Jersey chapter of Dress For Success invited me to come again this summer to continue teaching haircare techniques and styles.
When I heard about the offer, I could only think of the smiles on each of my students’ faces and the bridges formed between hair and identity for the women in the room, a mother bonding with her daughter in new way.  I thought about Dress For Success’s mission to help women in underprivileged communities find financial footing, a mission that personally resonates with me. I thought about the community and connection. I thought about the gratitude that radiated throughout the room when my students found out they got to keep the braiding supplies. I couldn’t find it in my heart to say no, despite having other commitments this summer. So, I focused my time on applying for this CSGC grant and like before Deerfield and CSGC provided. I’m very grateful for this opportunity to help in this way.
I am passionate about this project because I believe being confident and self-assured is crucial, especially in my experience as a Black woman, in the workplace or in an interview for a job. It creates a lasting impression. Components of confidence include but are not limited to self-presentation. Feeling assured when entering new environments is essential. It is essential to help women in my community have confidence. Teaching them how to care for and braid their own hair is my vehicle to make a positive impact because many people in my community cannot compete with the increasing cost of haircare. Thanks to Dress For Success and the CSGC this need can be met in a way that is sustainable.
