Jesse ’26 and Victor ’26 are supporting incoming students at Beacon Academy while planning a service project that connects their school community with a local daycare through reading, food donations, and meaningful engagement.
This summer, Jesse and I started working at Beacon Academy. This 10-year program prepares determined and inquisitive students from historically under-resourced and/or underrepresented communities to succeed in competitive high schools, colleges, and careers. We’ve been supporting the incoming 7th and 8th grade students during their summer session, helping them adjust through school visits, academic classes, and community-building sessions designed to show them the importance of collaboration and collective learning. As previous students at Beacon Academy, we understand the importance of participating in community service activities like these and encourage them to give back to their local communities.
As interns at the school, we have been speaking with Dr. Charles Carter, the head of school, and are in the process of planning our service project with Little People Playhouse, a daycare in Roslindale, MA, for students. In the past, students at Beacon Academy have participated in a program called Reading Buddies, where students read books to the children. We were inspired to recreate that experience in a way that was joyful and supported small businesses in the area as well.
As we are moving forward with the planning process, our goal is to support the daycare by providing snacks and food resources, while engaging the students from Beacon Academy to assist with the initiative.
