Oaxaca, Mexico #5: Classes, Picnics, and Baseball!

This summer, 12 students and two faculty members are traveling to Oaxaca, Mexico to immerse themselves in the culture and language of Oaxaca, Mexico and develop their conversational fluency and understanding of daily life in Mexico by living with Oaxacan families and attending class at the Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez. Please enjoy this blog post from Luca ’26 as she shares about the groups 4th day of classes with a picnic lunch and a day ending at a baseball game.

Hola familias!

Today we finished our fourth day of classes, with one more day to go until the weekend! For lunch we picnicked at a gorgeous garden area with a cafe! We hiked through the sun and heat to reach the Santo Domingo Library, Museum, and Church. It was something out of a fairytale, with long arched hallways and wooden doors and windows, which we embarrassingly learned we were not supposed to open. Daisy and I passed a large group of school children as we explored the dozens of rooms and balconies, and gazed at the cactus garden below. The children were sweet and energetic, with Spanish too fast for us to understand, but the conversation was awkwardly held for at least a few minutes. Then, at 7, some of the group walked down to see a partido de béisbol, with the Guerreros playing against the Piratas. Being entirely unable to understand baseball, I have no idea who won, but it was a fun game with lots of music, mango, tacos, and Mexican Coca Cola, which will always be the best kind. We were even featured on the big screen, waving somewhat in time with the music. Despite the multiple, definitely targeted, attacks of the giant black beetles, and the need for an umbrella and raincoats to protect us, we made it through the game unscathed, except for Daisy and Victor who might never recover from the beetle that they literally hacked away from themselves, and tried to shake onto me. Adiós, y buenas noches!
