Julia ’26 shares about the moving performance by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
After a wonderful dinner with Deerfield alumni at Founding Farmers Fishers & Bakers, our group made its way to the Kennedy Center, the heart of performing arts in the nation’s capital. We were lucky to witness the renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, a company celebrated for bringing African American cultural stories to life through movement. The evening’s performance featured a stunning mix of new works and contemporary favorites, but the highlight was Revelations—Ailey’s masterpiece. Premiered in 1960, Revelations is a three-act ballet set to traditional spirituals, depicting a journey from struggle and sorrow to faith and celebration. Each section tells a different story: Pilgrim of Sorrow portrays people longing for salvation, Take Me to the Water recreates a baptism with flowing, rippling movements, and Move, Members, Move bursts into the joyous spirit of church worship. The dancers’ expressive movement, powerful use of space, and deep emotional connection to the music made every moment unforgettable, immersing us in the cultural and spiritual atmosphere they created on stage. As the final notes played, bringing our day to a close, we joined the entire Washington, D.C. audience in a thunderous ovation. It was a truly magical and spiritual night. — Julia ’26
