Washington D.C. #4: Meta

Harry ’28 talks about the groups visit to Meta after their visit to the Supreme Court on the first day in Washington.

After lunch at the Supreme Court Café, we headed to the Meta’s D.C. office for a Q&A session with Kevin Martin, Meta’s Vice President of Global Public Policy. With a distinguished career spanning law, government, and technology policy, Martin previously served as Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under President George W. Bush from 2005 to 2009. Our conversation touched on Meta’s adaptation to the new Trump administration, with several new executive orders regarding technology and ethical artificial intelligence training. We also learned how Meta maintains its global policy, complying with regional government laws while combating misinformation effectively by abandoning its third-party content moderation and instead adopting X’s “community note” model. Additionally, we discussed the emerging role of social media in politics, emphasizing its influence on public discourse, elections, and policy-making. The talk provided much insight into relations between private institutions, governments, and the future of AI. After the conversation, we had a special opportunity to demo Meta’s latest technologies, the Meta Quest 3 Mixed Reality VR Headset and Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses—an exciting peek into the future of innovation, leaving us with much to reflect on as these advancements continue to shape the world. — Harry ’28
