Speech & Debate at St. Paul’s

On Sunday, Speech & Debate traveled to St. Paul’s School for their sixteenth annual invitational tournament. The format was Oregon-Style Cross-Examination debating on a prepared topic. That means plain-language (no jargon!), assertive exchanges on a subject debaters have researched for weeks. This year: “Resolved, that the United States government should designate all sources of fresh water within the country a vital national resource with its use subject to federal oversight and direction.”

Debating for the negative, novices Philip ’29 and Matthew ’29 went 3-0 and took 3rd-place pair.

Debating for the affirmative, advanced debaters Alice ’28 and John ’26 went 3-0 and took 1st-place pair, outscoring their competition by a significant margin.

Alice took 3rd place speaker overall, and John won the whole tournament, becoming DA’s second debater to qualify for the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship in Bristol, UK.

Congrats, debaters!

P.S. – Special thanks to Henry ’28 for substituting at the last minute. A herculean feat in a prepared debate!
