Event: Political Parties in Polarized Times

Famed political scientist E. E. Schattschneider once wrote, “democracy is unthinkable save in terms of parties.” Yet a record-high 27% of Americans hold an unfavorable view of both political parties, and 82% of Americans between 18-29 express a desire for more political parties.

What are political parties, really? How do they work? What purpose do they serve? How might they offer us a path forward toward a more healthy democracy?

On Tuesday evening, Deerfield will welcome the perfect guests to help us explore these questions. Amy Carnavale, Chair of the Massachusetts Republican Party, and Steve Kerrigan, Chair of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, will come together in a rare joint appearance to talk about political parties in polarized times.

Join us on Tuesday, October 1, from 6:45-7:40 pm, in the Concert Hall for this special event, a part of 24 for ’24: Election Education and Expressive Freedom.
