Jade ’25 makes art workshops accessible to all through a collaboration with the Bridgeport Covenant School and the Bridgeport Library.
My project aimed to provide art materials and lessons for young students to create artwork. Through teaching in classes and workshops, I achieved my goal of engaging students in art lessons.
The problem I wanted to address was the unavailability of affordable summer art programs. Art camps or workshops can be costly, have limited space, or lack high-quality materials. By collaborating with the Bridgeport Covenant School and with the Bridgeport Library, I provided art classes for students who might not have the opportunity to otherwise.
Through my project, I learned the importance of planning lessons and ordering art supplies ahead of time. I learned that there are many approaches to teaching a single subject. My goal was to make art fun so that students would be interested in continuing to develop their art skills beyond my class.
One memorable moment was when a mother who attended the workshop with her son told me she had never seen him draw and was impressed by his self-portrait. I hope my classes made a difference for the students and their perspective on art.
I am grateful to the CSGC for allowing me to carry out this project and help others.
