MLK Day Schedule

Marjorie Young – January 9, 2020

Deerfield Academy will celebrate the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 21. The theme for this year’s celebration is Following His Steps: Vision, Justice, and Healing. We look forward to welcoming speakers to campus who will amplify the ways in which they are living out this year’s theme through their social justice work. We will again incorporate community service into the day by collaborating with The Foodbank of Western Massachusetts.

We welcome Sarah Lewis as the Keynote speaker. Sarah is Associate Professor of History of Art and Architecture and African and African American Studies at Harvard. She has held curatorial positions at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and at the Tate Modern, London, and has taught at Yale University School of Art. We are also excited to welcome back to campus DA alumni workshop facilitators Angel Abreu ’92, Kyle Anderson ’01, Erwin Miller ’58, and Jennifer Turnbull ’98. Other guests include Dr. Riche Daniels Barnes, Romy Toussaint, Leni Fried, Rosetta Lee, Mohamad Hafez, and New Profit.

MLK Day celebrations will begin on the evening of Monday, January 20, with a sit-down dinner followed by a documentary viewing and spoken word performances. On Tuesday, January 21, we will dive into community dialogue by participating in workshops designed to help us practice our cultural competency skills while learning to elevate our voices towards social justice and positive change.
