Reading Comprehension Summer Project

Hannah McKie – September 3, 2019

Last week I finished my CSGC project. I spent six Wednesdays this summer working with a group of children from my church on reading comprehension and writing. We spent a lot of our time together reading the book Frindle by Andrew Clements which brought up conversations on originality, creativity, and authority. Throughout all of this, the children had the chance to work on their creative writing, writing pieces like causes they care about, and poems about aging and growing up.
By the end of our time together many of the children who were originally very eager to announce their hatred for reading were coming to me with books they thought we should discuss together next, and asking me to read the poems they wrote at home. The time I spent with the children was very rewarding for me, and I hope it planted a seed and passion for reading and writing in them.
