Dear Deerfield Families and Students,
I hope you’re enjoying a restful and restorative summer. As the 2016-2017 school year begins to ramp up, I write to share several leadership appointments at Deerfield:
- Robertson (Bob) R. Howe has been appointed Athletic Director. Bob served as Athletic Director at Loomis Chaffee School for the past 12 years, where he was responsible for a program of over 62 interscholastic teams. He has also served on the District IV Athletic Directors Council and on the Executive Board of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC). Currently the Vice President of NEPSAC, he begins a two-year term as President this December. Growing up as a faculty child and student at Loomis, Bob reports that he has vivid memories of “the manner in which Deerfield teams walked on the fields and played like true sportsmen.” Bob started at Deerfield over the summer and is joined by his wife, Amanda, and four daughters.
- Joe Lyons has been appointed Interim Academic Dean. Joe joined Deerfield as a history teacher in 2008, after teaching at Phillips Andover, Phillips Exeter, and The American School in Switzerland. He holds an A.B. in History from Harvard University and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Described as an “inspirational teacher” who is “universally respected” Joe served as History Department Chair for the past five years, demonstrating excellent judgment and reflective leadership, establishing a compelling vision, executing common goals, and capably navigating an in-depth review of the department. I’m thankful for Joe’s service in this interim role. Starting in January of 2017, I will conduct a search for a permanent appointee to this position.
- Charles “Chip” Davis has been appointed Dean of Admission and Financial Aid. Chip’s analytical skills, his depth and breadth of experience—in the classroom, the fields and the dormitory—and his time as a Deerfield parent, make him a natural choice for the position. Chip holds degrees from Bowdoin (AB), University of Massachusetts (MS) and Dartmouth (MALS). Chip has served on our admission committee for many years, both as a faculty reader and in his previous role as Director of Athletics. Throughout his 27-year tenure at Deerfield, Chip has consistently demonstrated generosity of spirit and exceptional leadership—and his affection and enthusiasm for Deerfield are boundless. Chip will continue to serve as varsity lacrosse coach.
- Amie Creagh has been appointed Assistant Head of School for Student Life, with Kevin Kelly becoming Dean of Students. Serving a five-year term, Kevin will manage the day-to-day components of student life at Deerfield: he will oversee two grades, assist with student/residential life management, attend to governance and advising programs, and oversee the disciplinary process. As Assistant Head of School for Student Life, Amie will manage the strategic, programmatic and long-range components of student life: coordinating an ethical residential life program, supporting faculty advisors and dorm residents, and seeking greater coherence and integration across the student experience.
Please join me in welcoming Bob, Joe, Chip, Amie, and Kevin to their new positions at Deerfield. With guidance of such a strong administrative team, I’m sure this year is going to be a great one at the Academy.
I look forward to seeing you at Deerfield in just a few short weeks!
Head of School
