Monday @ 6:30pm in the Greer: Down with #freesterling, Up with Deerfield

Curtis, Margarita – May 5, 2014

Reminder: Dr. Curtis, Ms. Young, and student leaders invite the entire DA community to come to the community forum tonight right after dinner @ the Greer at 6:30pm to discuss the #freesterling flyers that were posted and their impact on our community.

See below for Dr. Curtis’ original post on the matter.

Even those who don’t follow sports may be aware that LA Clippers basketball team owner Donald Sterling has been banned from the sport for life–and fined $2.5 million–for racist remarks he made. In passing down this punishment, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said: “Sentiments of this kind are contrary to the principles of inclusion and respect that form the foundation of our diverse, multicultural and multi-ethnic league.” The same is true at Deerfield.

I am deeply disappointed by the “#freesterling” posters found on campus. The ignorance and prejudice they seem to support seriously undermine our commitment to an inclusive, diverse community.

Bigotry has no place here. Instead, let’s make Deerfield a place for meaningful conversations about difficult topics–opinions expressed in ways that are productive and respectful, opinions that seek to enhance our sense of community.

Tripp Kaelin and Maggie Shilling have agreed to join Ms. Young, and me, as well as DBSA leaders Jared Armes and Kayla Ali, for a forum on Monday evening at 6:30 in the Greer. Please join us.
