Tryouts for the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition will be held at 4:00pm on Sunday, May 20th in the Deerfield Room. The 2012 IISPSC tournament will be held at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School in Calgary from October 25-28, 2012.
Those students interested in trying out will be asked to do the following:
- Prepare a memorized monologue/selection from a play/story or a piece you have written. It should be 3-5 minutes long and can be dramatic or funny.
- Give an impromptu speech. In this event, you are given three choices (e.g. super models, reality TV, siblings) and you have about 10 seconds to choose one. You then have 2 minutes to come up with an original 2:45-5:15 minute speech. You can use notes to prepare, but you can’t use them while speaking. These are usually playful, creative, and funny.
Information on the rules and events for this exciting competition and international experience are posted on the debate Moodle page. There will be three students on Deerfield’s team and three alternates chosen (current freshmen and sophomores are encouraged to apply). If you are interested in trying out please let Charles Jones know by 5:00pm this Friday.
If you have questions, please ask Charles Jones or Mr. O’Donnell.
