Here is an interesting article from the Times Higher Education ranking the “top” 100 universities in the World. This particular ranking is the first of its kind looking solely at the reputations of institutions for teaching and research. Other rankings, like the (in)famous US News and World Report Best Colleges, focus on a myriad of data, both self reported by colleges and universities, as well as data estimated by US News. For instance, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst is ranked higher than many of the Ivy League schools in Times Higher Education–#19, in fact. Schools like Bates, Bowdoin, Whittier, Whitman, and Carleton, all outstanding liberal arts colleges, are not even ranked in the Times article. What is the take-away message? Do your homework. Be informed. Read articles like Malcolm Gladwell’s The Order of Things.
