Summer CSGC Grant Update: Promoting Wetland Conservation Through Art

Yong ’27 is raising awareness about the endangered Chongming Dongtan Wetland in China by volunteering, photographing local bird species, and organizing an educational workshop for elementary students.

This summer, I will be raising awareness about the Chongming Dongtan Wetland Conservation in my hometown in China through art, supported by the CSGC Summer Grant. This wetland provides vital resting and feeding grounds for birds migrating along the Asia-Pacific flyway. However, I’ve noticed that plastic waste and other debris have polluted the coastline, putting local wildlife at risk. I began to wonder how I could help protect this often overlooked but crucial habitat. Upon returning to China for summer break, I visited the wetland conservation center for the third time and was fortunate to volunteer by photographing birds for the local museum, which will use the images to educate the public. I have also partnered with a local public elementary school to organize an educational workshop for students, which is scheduled for early August.
