Carrie Brown’s New Novel, ‘The Stargazer’s Sister’

Danae DiNicola – January 19, 2016

Deerfield English teacher Carrie Brown’s new novel, The Stargazer’s Sister, was published today by Pantheon. A period novel set in the nineteenth century, it tells the story of Caroline Herschel, sister of the great composer and astronomer William Herschel, and astronomer in her own right. The Washington Post’s Andrea Barrett writes, “Wisely, sometimes brilliantly, Brown skips over much of the familiar material, instead training her gaze on the blanks in the record and emphasizing experiences a biographer might scant … The result is a satisfying romance about what it might have been like to be a woman who ‘thought she was coming to England to keep house for William. Instead, she is being ushered into a place where the size of the universe is in question.’ ”

Brown worked as a journalist before she began writing fiction and teaching. She is the author of six novels and a collection of short stories.
