What is KIPP STEP?
KIPP STEP is a 3-week intensive summer program that provides a unique opportunity for 40 selected rising eighth grade KIPPsters and 10 talented local students to experience the academic rigor and lifestyle of a top boarding school. The program focuses on science and ELA to help develop students’ skills in research, writing, presentation, discussion, studying, time management, and critical thinking, all skills necessary for success in the most challenging academic environments. The program also aims to spark a passion for science in students through the intensive physics and biology curriculum.
The Student’s Experience:
In a survey of KIPP alumni who attended Deerfield Academy, science and ELA were identified as the most challenging academic areas during their freshman year of high school, and time management as one of the most challenging non-academic areas. This program provides students with a glimpse early on of what it would be like in a boarding school environment. Monday through Friday, students have class in the morning and directly following lunch. In the afternoons, students participate in recreational activities and enrichment projects and conclude the day with study hall and a dorm meeting. On the weekends, students participate in field trips and other community building activities. The final week of the program involves the design and execution of a science experiment, and culminates with a presentation of the project.
The Teacher’s Experience:
The summer program provides an incredible professional development opportunity for a few teachers each year. KIPP STEP teachers work closely with veteran boarding school faculty to build the summer curriculum and team teach classes. During the spring months, teachers will collaborate to create a rich 3-week curriculum including. During the summer, teachers utilize the state-of-the-art teaching facilities at Deerfield Academy to deliver dynamic and engaging classes. It’s a great opportunity for teachers who are looking to bring new ideas back to their classrooms and schools, and share with the larger education network.

Program Dates & Location:
February-April 2017: Preliminary curriculum discussions and planning
May 2017: Conference call with other KIPP STEP faculty to plan curriculum
June 2017: Calls to advisees and their families
July 6-9, 2017: Final planning meetings in Deerfield, MA
July 10-29, 2017: Summer Program at Deerfield Academy
July 30, 2017: Faculty Depart
- Report directly to Program Director
- Work with the Curriculum Co-Director of assigned content area to create summer curriculum
- Work with Program Director to plan, implement, and evaluate the program including participating in conference calls and communications during the academic year
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging classroom instruction and assessment in the assigned content area of ELA
- Reside in the Deerfield dormitories for the duration of the program and perform assigned supervisory roles
- Proctor evening study hall and provide tutorial support for students
- Act as a student advisor to a small number of students, make welcome phone calls to advisees in June and provide support as needed
- Assist with any travel and check-in/out needs for participating students at the beginning and end of the program
- Serve as a chaperone or instructor for weekend field trips and daily activities
- Work with faculty and proctors to ensure a safe, supportive and positive learning environment for all participants
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned
- Current ELA teacher at the middle school or high school level; preference given to teachers with KIPP experience
- Commitment to working in a team environment
- Belief that all students can learn
- Commitment to the learning and success of all children through high expectations and accountability
- Proven results with students who mirror the KIPP student demographic
- Boarding school experience either as a student or teacher preferred, but not required
- Willingness to participate in recreational activities as needed preferred, but not required
- Ability to model KIPP values at all times
