KIPP STEP Physics Teacher

KIPP STEP Virtual Summer Program at Deerfield Academy

Position: Physics Teacher

What is KIPP STEP?

KIPP STEP is a 3-week intensive virtual summer program that provides a unique opportunity for 40 selected rising eighth grade KIPPsters and 10 talented local students to experience the academic rigor and lifestyle of a top boarding school.  The program focuses on science and ELA to help develop students’ skills in research, writing, presentation, discussion, studying, time management, and critical thinking, all skills necessary for success in the most challenging academic environments. This virtual program also aims to spark a passion for science in students through the intensive physics and biology curriculum.

The Student’s Experience:

In a survey of KIPP alumni who attended Deerfield Academy, science and ELA were identified as the most challenging academic areas during their freshman year of high school, and time management as one of the most challenging non-academic areas. This program provides students with a glimpse of the academic rigor and expectations of a highly selective boarding school.  The program meets on-line Monday through Friday for three weeks.  Students begin their days at 11am with a short program meeting and then attend three academic classes; Biology, Physics and ELA.  There is also an hour of optional extra help in the evening.

The Teacher’s Experience:

The summer program provides an incredible professional development opportunity for a few teachers each year.  Teachers work closely with one another to create an engaging and challenging curriculum. During three weeks in July, Physics teachers will teach two 45 minute classes per day Monday thru Friday. KIPP STEP is a great opportunity for teachers who are looking to work closely with colleagues to build rich and dynamic course content.
