Faculty and Staff Holiday Bash!!
This year’s annual Faculty and Staff Holiday Party, held December 19th for all the employees of Deerfield Academy, was an ENORMOUS success!!
Guests arrived at the Starfield in the Koch Center on this cold, winter night around 6:00pm. As the guests arrived dressed in brightly colored island attire, they selected a green or brown ceramic tiki cup to use for the evening, and take home as a party favor. They enjoyed live music from the band The Grift, rum drink cocktails, and Island hors d’oeuvres until a Caribbean style buffet dinner was served at 7 p.m. Behind the band was a “waterfall,” created with netting, shells, and lights. Other island decorations included life preservers, raffia on the cocktail bars and a treasure chest from which raffle numbers were drawn for the winners of the baskets and bottles of cheer. The buffet dinner was a true culinary feast, with many island flavors such as Coconut Fried Shrimp with Dipping Sauce and Grilled Jerk Chicken Skewers.
At 9 p.m., a band member pulled names from the treasure chest announcing the winners of the 7 lavish gift baskets, followed by the raffling off of the donated bottles of wine and champagne. This year, the parent body generously donated Visa or American Express gift cards, gift cards to local restaurants and bottles of wine and champagne to the 7 raffle baskets for the event.
After the dinner and the raffle was finished, the band The Grift kicked off the dancing and entertainment which lasted late into the night. The Grift is an independent band from Burlington, VT which includes our very own Deerfield faculty member, Pete Nilsson! Additional staff and faculty members from Deerfield joined The Grift on stage as well. With Pete Nilsson (English teacher) on the keyboard, Marc Dancer (math teacher) on the saxophone and flute, and vocalists Stuart Bicknell (counseling), Mary Ellen Friends (history teacher), Laura Harcourt (Assistant to Academic Dean), Dave Karbon (security), Amy Lareau (college advisor), David Miller (history teacher), Brent Hale (Art director) and Anna Steim (English teacher), the evening was alive and vibrant with their favorite rock-and-roll and disco songs that enticed the faculty and staff to crowd the dance floor well into the night.
As John Taylor, the Dean of Faculty said, “I loved attending the Jingle-Mingle this year. As soon as I walked through the door of the Koch Center, I knew it was going to be a good party. A sea of employees and their significant others were spread over three floors listening to upbeat, familiar songs that were coming from a band on the ground floor. I haven’t seen that many employees enjoying themselves like that in a long time. It was quite a night.”
Jan Kari, Director of Human Resources and Chair of the Jingle Mingle Planning Committee added “The most heart-warming aspect of this Employee Holiday Party is the good will it generates to bring all adult community members together for a festive occasion after students leave for the holidays. No other event during our school year accomplishes this in the same way with the same warmth, or resulting in quite the same sense of connectedness. It affords those who participate a chance to “work” alongside other employees who they may rarely interact with otherwise.”
As Margarita Curtis, Head of School, reflects on the evening, she would like to say, “Thanks to our parents’ creativity and generosity, the Jingle Mingle provided a most festive close to the calendar year. A highlight of the evening was the raffle – both of the shimmering baskets and the bottles of cheer. Everyone shared in the excitement of the winners! On behalf of the Deerfield community, I extend a big thank-you for your thoughtfulness.”
We are fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented group of faculty and staff at Deerfield Academy who, along with their families, are an integral part of our children’s daily lives. Parents in the community were beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to thank them for all they do for our children. We appreciate the participation of so many parents this year, and the coordination of the DPN Committee, which helped to make this effort a resounding success.
