Winter 101 – Surviving and Thriving in the Cold
So it will be cold. Also snowy…and icy…and dark. But there are many ways to make winter in Deerfield a little warmer and a little brighter. To avoid the winter blues, it’s important to remember a few important guidelines:
- Hibernating is for the bears–Encourage your child to get out and about. While it might be tempting to snuggle under the covers and never come out, engaging in activities and with friends is a terrific way to beat the cold. Take a hike to The Rock or a brisk walk down Main Street (Richardson’s Candy Kitchen is a sweet destination!). Open the shades to let in as much daylight as possible.
Deerfield has only one sit-down dinner a week during the winter months, so it is a terrific time for our children to branch out and make new friends. They can get to know teammates, hall mates, and classmates that they haven’t spent time with.
With so many dogs at Deerfield, offering to take the pooch of a faculty or staff member for a spin around campus is a great way to help a community member and enjoy the outdoors.
That Deerfield spirit burns bright, and cheering for classmates at the rink, pool, or squash courts is a wonderful way to fill weekend days and nights. And if bed seems like the only sensible place to be, stop by the Boyden Library for a new book or DVD to hunker down with.
- Embrace your inner Inuit – Not used to snow? Winter in Deerfield will provide a perfect opportunity to get acquainted…and to have fun with/in it! Students can learn to ski, go sledding with friends (just ask a faculty member with kids for a sled or two), or build a beautiful snowman.
- Make health a priority – Getting adequate sleep is vital for staying healthy and happy this winter. Students should make every effort to obtain the 8+ hours that are the ideal for teens. If a student feels under the weather, he or she should go to the Health Center. The nurses and doctors on staff there will be on hand with TLC until they are back on their feet.
A balanced diet helps maintain health and energy. The Dining Hall emphasizes healthy foods, so we should encourage our kids to take full advantage. For overall well-being, a good workout can be a big boost. Students can use the cardio equipment and weight room throughout the season. Students can also try out the paddle tennis courts behind the gym, ice skating, yoga, or even a vigorous snowball fight!
If you sense that your child is struggling with the season, encourage him or her to talk with someone. Advisors, hall residents, and teachers are all available to lend an ear or words of encouragement.
- Everything must end…eventually – Finally, make sure your child knows that the season is finite. By March, Spring Break is around the corner. And the average temperature will spike to a balmy high of 45 degrees and a low of 24 degrees!
