Parents Fall Weekend Lineup 2013
How much can fit into two days at Deerfield? The answer for Parents Fall Weekend (Friday, October 18-Sunday, October 20) is: A LOT! The activities begin Friday morning with first period classes at 8am, a welcome from Head of School Dr. Margarita Curtis at 10am, and faculty/parent conferences on Friday afternoon from 1:30-3:30pm. You are able to schedule time ahead to meet each of your child’s teachers.
On Friday afternoon, Mark Spencer, Director of College Counseling, and Peter Warsaw, Academic Dean, will present Pathways to College at 4pm, followed by class receptions (for parents only and a great chance to socialize!) from 5:15-6:15pm. There will be a Freshmen and Sophomore Dinner in the Dining Hall on Friday night, which is a wonderful opportunity for parents and students to socialize as a group on campus. The Performing Arts Showcase begins at 7:30pm, and you will be amazed at the vast array of talent on stage at this must-see event.
There is additional time on Saturday morning (8am-12pm) for parent/faculty conferences.
Louise York (VP for DPN) and Jeff Jewett, Director of Sustainability, are planning a community event on Saturday morning (8:30am-10:30am) that they hope will raise awareness of the richness of the Pioneer Valley with DA parents, while furthering the school’s sustainability mission. Details to follow!
David Miller, Director of Global Studies and International Development, has organized a presentation entitled, Deerfield Abroad: Education Beyond the Hills on Saturday afternoon at 1:30pm. The session will start with a brief overview of all of the upcoming travel programs in the context of Deerfield’s global studies initiatives, followed by breakout sessions with the individual leaders of trips to the Dominican Republic, Spain, China, and Tanzania. Details about financial aid, applications, and risk management will be briefly addressed, but David said that the focus of the presentation is “why we lead these trips and the outcomes we have seen.” If anyone has not had a chance to hear David speak he is incredibly engaging and his enthusiasm is contagious. After this informative session, please come and root for the Big Green athletic contests that begin on campus at 3pm.
All these activities during Parents Weekend are a wonderful way to connect with other Deerfield families and to gain a stronger sense of our children’s classes, teachers, advisors, activities, friends, and the Dining Hall food! There will be information coming about registration for the weekend, and you will also receive an email in early October from the Academic Dean’s Office with instructions to schedule faculty conferences. Please register for this action packed, informative, and rewarding weekend!
