Jan Flaska came to the Deerfield Academy community in the fall of 2005. He is the Dean of Spiritual and Ethical Life, he currently teaches in the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department, and oversees service learning and civic engagement initiatives in the Deerfield Academy community as a member of the Center for Service and Global Citizenship.
Jan has degrees from Boston University, Boston College, and Bowdoin College, and a doctoral degree from Catholic Theological Union (Chicago). He is deeply interested in promoting the worth of silent, contemplative practices in the lives of adolescents, particularly given the constant intrusion of noisy technology in their lives.
For over two decades, Jan has coached high school soccer, ice hockey, lacrosse and tennis, and he has coached collegiately at Boston University, the University of Chicago, and Harvard University. Jan is also the head coach of the Slovak National Lacrosse team. The unsolicited advice he gives any adolescent athlete is to play every sport you can, all the time!
