Wrestling Secures Victory in Senior Meet

Wrestling hosted their senior meet against Salisbuty on Saturday, securing a dominant win in a quick matchup. Salisbury had a thin lineup, so only six matches were wrestled and DA took several forfeits. Nonetheless, the team wrestled well with some wrestlers closing out matches quickly, while others got a first win of the season, and others fought hard and wrestled well despite a loss.  Special mention to Deerfield’s senior lineup for completing their last regular wrestling seasons: Zavi Salomon-Fernandez, Nathan Blaya, David Peirce, Bronson Branch, Angel Paez, Shogo O’Connor, and Billy Tang all deserve a pat on the back!

The boys’ varsity squash team extended their winning streak to 11 matches with three impressive 7-0 victories this week. They defeated Westminster, Millbrook, and St. Paul’s in commanding fashion, continuing their dominant season. Meanwhile, the girls’ squash team added another win to their record on Saturday with a victory over St. Paul’s.

Deerfield’s boys’ varsity hockey team continued their strong play, notching three wins at home over the past week. On Wednesday, they topped Westminster 5-2, followed by a 3-1 win over Pomfret on Friday, and capped the weekend with a decisive 6-1 victory against Hotchkiss on Saturday. With five consecutive wins, the team is on a roll heading into the final stretch of the season.

In the Hastings Cup on Wednesday, Deerfield’s girls’ hockey team defeated Pomfret 3-0. Gia Thompson ’26 opened the scoring, followed by Chloe Cleaves ’26 with a power-play goal and Peyton Wierl ’26, assisted by Olivia Austen ’27 and Allie Corrieri ’25, adding another. Izzy Kirby ’26 earned the shutout in goal. On Saturday, in a rematch of last year’s Elite 8, Deerfield faced a tough Andover squad at home. Andover controlled much of the early play, but Campbell Krotee ’25 held strong in goal. As the game picked up pace, Deerfield’s forecheck and defensive play led to a late-game breakthrough, with Brady Wierl ’25 scoring the game-winning goal after a turnover caused by Peyton Wierl ’26. Despite a late penalty, Krotee and the penalty killers kept Andover off the scoreboard to seal a 1-0 victory.

Deerfield’s ski team competed at Berkshire East this past weekend, facing off against six other schools. The girls’ team finished strong, securing 2nd place out of 7 teams, while the boys placed 3rd out of 8. Individually, Rowan Skinner ‘26 took 2nd place, Cecelia Cramer ‘26 came in 5th, and Anais Vieira ‘26 finished 10th out of 35 female racers, showcasing some outstanding performances.

JV Swim had an extremely successful weekend earning their first wins of the season against Eagle Hill and Bancroft on Saturday. After working on safe starts all week in practice, we were thrilled by our first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, swam by Melody Zhao, Clark Hess, Kenan Ozada, and Eloise Forrest. Also worth mentioning are the first-place finishes of Yong Ding, Melody Zhao, Julie Yan, and Clark Hess in their respective individual races. Jazmine Wilson Bigornia had an incredible swim in the 500-yard freestyle, beating her Deerfield best time by nearly a full minute! Other exciting achievements include Josh Cole swimming his first sub-30-second 50-yard freestyle and Julie Yan swimming her first 100-yard butterfly at Deerfield (and placing first in it!).

Deerfield teams will compete on Wednesday before the Long Winter Weekend! Wrestling will be staying to take part in the Class A Championships at NMH on Saturday. We wish them the best of luck!
