The varsity wrestling team competed in the Class A Championship and New England Championship in back-to-back weekends emerging with impressive results and podium finishes.
During Long Winter Weekend, the varsity wrestling team traveled to neighboring NMH for the Class A Championship tournament. The Class A Championship plays a vital role for wrestlers to qualify for the upcoming New England Championship. At the tournament, nine Big Green wrestlers qualified for the New England Championship, these wrestler’s included: Jian Yeo ’28, Blaze Etienne-Cummings ’28, Zavi Salomon-Fernandez ’25, Matthew Hough ’26, Nathan Blaya ’25, David Peirce ’25, Bronson Branch ’25, Angel Paez ’25, and Shogo O’Connor ’25.
With another week of training under their belt, the Big Green traveled to Exeter on Friday, February 14 for the New England Championship tournament. At the championship tournament, three Big Green student-athletes earned podium finishes and two qualified for Nationals.
Zavi Salomon-Fernandez ’25 earned a 7th place finish at the New England Championship. Meanwhile, first-year teammate Blaze Etienne-Cummings placed 5th and Jian Yeo ‘28 tied for 5th place. With their results, both first-year wrestlers qualified for the National Wrestling Championship.
At the New England Championship, David Peirce ‘25, Matthew Hough ‘26, Nathan Blaya ‘25, Angel Paez ‘25, and Bronson Branch ‘25 all competed hard in their respective weight classes and earned impressive results.
This season, the varsity wrestling team posted seven team wins with their final team win coming at home over visiting Salisbury. The Big Green defeated the Salisbury Knights, 51-18 in the final home meet for the seniors.
