Varsity Hockey Sweeps the Week

It was a week to remember for Deerfield’s varsity hockey teams, as both the girls’ and boys’ squads put together a flawless performance finishing 5-0 on the week. If you include the JV teams, the sweep extended to an impressive 7-1 record. Most notable were the thrilling victories against Big Green’s rival, Choate.

Girls varsity kicked off their week with an exciting 2-1 victory over Choate on Wednesday. After a beautiful power-play goal from Olivia Austen ’27, Choate responded with a second-period equalizer. However, Deerfield’s Ava Giroux ’26 came through with a game-winner, tipping in a shot from Brady Wierl ’26 to seal the win.

The girls made the long trip to New Hampton on Friday night, and came home with a hard fought 2-1 win. Though New Hampton got on the board first, Chloe Cleaves ‘26 tied the score on a beautiful drive to goal. Cleaves then scored again on another great effort, taking a nice pass from Sophie Frost ‘26 and creating space for herself toward the goal.

On Saturday, Deerfield girls hockey posted a dominant 5-0 win over Taft. They controlled play and possession from the get go, demonstrating real grit in our third game of the week. Ava Giroux ’26 opened the scoring early in the first. Then Allie Corrieri ’25 picked the top corner from the point on the power play (assist to Keira Austen ’26) before Olivia Austen ’27 pounced on a rebound from a Gill Herr ’27 shot, also on the power play. We added two more goals in the third period, the first from Thompson on a great individual effort, and the second from Frost on a strong drive to goal after a good pass from Olivia Austen. Izzy Kirby ’26 earned another shutout in goal.

Deerfield boys hockey opened the week with a home game against Kimball Union. After a scoreless first period, KUA was able to put two on the board, both during power plays. Deerfield quickly responded by putting up their first goal from Drew Kelver ‘25. Down 2-1, Deerfield rallied back in the third period to score three unanswered goals. Two were scored by Zachary Chehade ‘25 off spectacular assists by Kelver and Lance Roberts ‘25. Oliver Duininck ‘25 also found the net, putting Deerfield on top 4-2 at the end of the game.

On Saturday, the boys travelled to Wallingford to handle business against Choate, coming away with a 4-2 victory. They started the game strong with back to back goals in the first period. The first scored by Roberts and the second by Matteo Alvarez ‘26. Choate attempted to keep up, scoring once in second period and once in the third, but Deerfield kept them at bay, matching each one of their goals. Roberts fired back his second goal of the game in the second period and Cam Umlah ‘25 netting a solo effort in the third to seal the win.

Deerfield boys JV hockey were away at Williston on Wednesday where they secured a 4-1 win over the Wildcats. The game was very competitive and was locked at 0-0 after the first period. Both teams had good scoring opportunities, but the Williston goalie and our own Drake Esquer ‘28 rose to the challenge and kept their teams in the game. Deerfield struck first in the second period with Avery Powers ‘27 scoring his first of two in the afternoon with a nice assist from linemate Jack Vergamini ‘27. Williston was able to match the goal, but not long before Vergamini punched home a loose puck into the Williston net. Powers and Vergamini continued their scoring streaks with another goal each in the third period.

On Saturday, the boys got to play their first home game of the season against arch-rival Choate. Despite playing much of the first period short-handed, the team held strong and kept Choate from scoring. The game was scoreless after the first period. The second period was a breakout performance, with Deerfield netting three goals and playing solid defense. The big news on the day was the goaltending. Drake led the way with a flawless 1st period of play. Then Sawyer Johnson ‘25 got some well-deserved time between the pipes, and he also kept Choate off the scoreboard making a few key saves along the way in the second stanza of play. Then in the third, our newbie goalie PJ Pirsch ‘28 entered the game, and he too made some nice saves and preserved the 5-0 shutout win for his team.

Deerfield’s squash teams also had an unbelievable week! JV boys and girls squash swept Wednesday, while girls and boys varsity squash swept on Saturday. The boys JV team began the week with an 8-1 win against Choate at home, extending their perfect winning streak to six matches in a row this season. This was quickly followed up by a 6-4 victory from girls JV against Bement. The girls also extended their winning streak to six matches in a row.

On Saturday, the boys varsity team travelled to Tabor Academy for their match. They held up strong, ending the day 5-2 and extending their winning streak to seven matches in a row. The girls varsity team competed against both Sacred Heart and Westminster at home. They played Sacred Heart first, winning 5-2 before taking on Westminster and sweeping the match 7-0. These triumphs bring the girls to a 5 match winning streak.

The excitement continues for the Deerfield teams and we can expect more strong showings in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more exhilarating moments as the season progresses!
