It was a beautiful Saturday in Deerfield, something we haven’t seen in a while, and perfect for a thrilling day of baseball and softball. Across four games, three teams, and nearly 24 innings of play, Deerfield’s athletes didn’t allow a single run. In total, the teams recorded four shutouts in a showcase of pitching power, defensive precision, and timely hitting.
The day began on the turf with JV Baseball setting the stage for the day with a 3-0 win over Andover. Lucas Taylor ‘28 and Stephen Gomez ‘28 combined for a no-hitter, with Taylor going six innings, striking out three, and walking three. Gomez slammed the door in the seventh, striking out the side. Behind them, the defense was airtight, recording 15 outs in the field. Offensively, Max Fukudome ‘28, Drake Esquer ‘28, and Michael Hioe ‘27 supplied the runs Deerfield needed to secure the shutout.
Immediately following the JV victory, Varsity Baseball took the field for a doubleheader also against Andover. In Game 1, starter Connor Niemiec ‘25 was dominant, giving up just two hits and striking out nine over five innings. Reliever Tripp Woytowicz ‘25 was equally impressive, tossing two perfect innings and fanning four. Right fielder Tate Bannish ‘25 drove in two of Deerfield’s three runs, and Jack Welch ‘26 stood out as the game’s only multi-hit batter. Another 3-0 final for the Big Green!
On the nearby softball field, Deerfield wasted no time in a three-inning mercy-run win over Stoneleigh-Burnham. Every player was able to get in some game time. Nicole Lefavour ‘27 was lights out on the mound, striking out six in three innings and only allowing one hit. On offense, Maggie Garbarino ‘27 launched a ball to deep center for an easy double, and Kaylin Alvarez ‘28 blasted a bases-loaded triple to cap the second inning. Izzy Kirby ‘26 followed up with her own triple to begin the third inning for Big Green. The 15-0 win highlighted the team’s growth across the entire roster.
Varsity baseball returned for Game 2 with the same focus and fire. Woytowicz returned as the starter and combined with Caleb Allen ‘25 on a one-hitter. The duo struck out seven and didn’t issue a single walk. At the plate, Bannish knocked in a run in the third, while Allen and Connor Mudd ‘26 each delivered two-RBI hits in the sixth to secure the 5-0 win and complete the double header sweep.
Between the three teams, Deerfield posted four shutouts, surrendering just four hits. Contributions came from every corner of the roster, a powerful statement to not just their talent, but their unity and competitive spirit. As the season heads into its final stretch, Saturday’s sweep stands as a reminder of what these teams are capable of. The softball team will host their Senior Day Game on Wednesday against Loomis, and Saturday marks the start of baseball playoffs!
