Golf Stays Hot Over Andover and Choate

Deerfield Academy’s varsity golf team continued its impressive run, extending its winning streak to five matches with recent victories over Andover and Choate. The games were played “match play” style, meaning players were aiming to win the most holes using the least strokes rather than the least total strokes after all the holes.

Against Andover, the Big Green faced early deficits across several matches and even endured a 50-minute rain delay. But the team remained locked in, battling back from behind to ultimately secure a hard-fought 8.5-3.5 win over a talented opponent.

Later in the week, under clear skies in Wallingford, CT, Deerfield delivered a dominant performance against Choate. Also match play style, DA won every match, showcasing the team’s depth and consistency.

Leading the charge was Aaron Koo ‘28, who played stellar golf and shot under par in both matches. Tucker Gongaware ‘26, played in the #1 seed, also went two-for-two – most impressively while using the coach’s clubs after forgetting his own for the Choate match. Co-captains Gunnar Moore ‘25 and Liana Chen ‘25 continued to lead by example, Chen shooting an even par against Choate. Drew Keiver ‘25 and Michael Clifford-Levy ‘26 also contributed wins against both teams with steady, focused play. Adding to the team’s depth, Tucker Sichol ‘27, Luca Lyons ‘26, and Michael Wu ‘27 earned critical points in both matches, highlighting the strength across the roster.

Coach Lyons praised the group, saying, “I am proud of this group. Not only are they a talented group of golfers, but they display the resilience and focus necessary to prevail against excellent competition. Perhaps more importantly, they support each other and foster a positive environment. I am fortunate to be a part of this group.”

With their fifth straight win, Deerfield’s varsity golf team is firing on all cylinders and heading into the next stretch of the season with confidence. They currently hold an outstanding 9-1 record, and look to improve it at Saturday’s III Tourney at Crumpin’ Fox.

Go Big Green!
