Doors of the Week

Congratulations to this week’s Doors of the Week!

Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving: Anne Kelly ’27 and Julia Lu ’28
The DAGVSD Doors of the Week title goes to two athletes this week, Anne Kelly ’27 and Julia Lu ’28.
Anne is an energetic, supportive, and competitive athlete. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and she is constantly motivating and cheering on her teammates at both practice and meets. She is the ultimate team player, providing support to everyone both in and outside of the pool. Anne’s positive attitude and fierce determination make her a valuable asset to the team. In our meet against Choate, Anne delivered an impressive 100-meter backstroke, finishing with her best time. Anne is truly deserving of this title because of her consistent effort, positive attitude, and unconditional support for her teammates.
Julia is a motivated and reliable competitor who pushes herself and those around her every day at practice. She has been trying new intervals, tackling new and challenging events at our meets, and consistently dropping time in her swims. Julia is a determined athlete, and her coaches can always count on her to train harder, inspire others, and put in the work to improve. She takes on challenging workouts and events with a smile and a positive attitude. As a team player, Julia honors her teammates through her constant effort. She receives this title because of her determination, hard work, and positive attitude.

First team win of the season for girls 3rds basketball against Great Falls, with many different contributors and contributions in all areas.  The team played with a lot of heart and hustle, and maintained positive energy throughout the game, as they have been doing all season long.

Girls Varsity Hockey: Brady Weirl ’26
Brady Weirl ’26 earns our DOTW nomination this week for her exceptional performance and crucial contributions to the team this week. In Saturday’s game, Brady’s play was outstanding, and it was her goal in the last few minutes of the third period that gave us the lead against Andover. After chasing down a dumped puck in the offensive zone, Brady capitalized on a clearing attempt from the other team’s goalie and found the back of the net. Throughout the game, her composure with the puck stood out, and her relentless effort on every shift kept the team energized during a tough, hard-fought game. Brady’s growth been evident all season, and it’s been exciting to see her hard work and dedication pay off. Brady has also been consistently a supportive and positive presence on for the team. They lean on her to bring the energy and to pump everyone up. Great work, Brady!

Boys JV Hockey: Jack Vergamini ’27
The Boys JV Hockey team would like to nominate Jack Vergamini for this week’s Door of the Week.  Jack works hard at every practice, models two-way play and brings an energy to the team that makes him a highly valued team member. One of our leading offensive players Jack is also a committed defensive zone player. He’s a good teammate to all and he wears the Vergamini smile every day at practice.

Girls Varsity Basketball: Cori Scagel ’25
This week, Girls Varsity Basketball nominates Cori Scagel ’25 for DOTW. Cori has shown her leadership skills as a captain and her determination as a basketball player. Cori has been leading the team in defense and all-around game. Cori gives her all on the court, in both games and in practice! She is a wonderful asset to the team!

Boys Varsity Swimming & Diving: Robert Wickenden ’28
Robert is a new first-year student at Deerfield who is one of the most coachable athletes I have come across in my career.  As a developing varsity-level swimmer, he takes any and all coaching input to heart and always gives 100% in practice on the way towards improving.  At our meet last Saturday against Andover, in Robert’s four swims he came away with four season-best times!  He even, without complaint, swam the dreaded 500 Freestyle for the team!  Robert has shown himself to be a true team player and hard worker and we look forward to seeing his growth, as well as, benefitting from his influence and impact on the team over the next three years!

JV Swimming: Olivia Minn ’28
This week JV Swim would like to nominate Olivia Minn as our DOTW. New to the team and to swimming this year, Olivia has most impressed us with her fearlessness in the water and her willingness (even eagerness) to swim new events. At our Suffield meet, despite it being Olivia’s first ever swim meet, she swam an impressive four events, including two 100-yard events, calmly stepping in to replace an injured swimmer in a relay at the last second. For context, we often ask our new swimmers to swim only two events in their first meet. She is always the first in line to practice her flip turns or starts from the block and is extremely receptive to feedback. Her hard work is paying off, as she’s dropped nearly 10 seconds in her 50-yard freestyle since the start of the season. Her infectious smile and positive mindset help bring a levity to the pool deck that the team greatly appreciates. We expect to see awesome things from Olivia in the coming seasons and feel grateful to have her on our team!

Boys Thirds Squash: Jasper Gruhl ’28
For his incredible drive to succeed in a sport that’s still new to him—but you would never guess it if you watched him play. Jasper’s grit and determination are evident, and he has high expectations of himself. His improvement in squash since the start of the season has been remarkable, and he now holds a solid spot in the top four of the line-up. He’s been an absolute pleasure to coach.

Go Big Green!
