On Saturday, Deerfield hosted long-time rival Choate Rosemary Hall in a pair of thrilling varsity lacrosse match ups that kept fans on their toes. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams delivered clutch performances, earning Big Green a clean sweep over their rivals.
The girls’ varsity lacrosse team set the tone for the afternoon with a hard-fought 13-9 victory. The first half was a battle going back-and-forth with Deerfield trailing 3-4 at the end of the first quarter. A strong second quarter, highlighted by a possession-dominating effort from Chase Collins ‘25 and the draw unit, propelled the team to a 7-6 halftime lead.
Deerfield’s offensive pressure remained relentless. The ride game was especially strong, leading to several caused turnovers that shifted momentum in Big Green’s favor. Lily Woods ‘26 emerged as a second half spark, attacking the goal with intensity and helping stretch the lead. High energy from the sideline and a full-team effort on the field made all the difference as Deerfield held off Choate to secure the win.
The boys’ game brought even more drama, as Deerfield fought their way to a 10-9 win in a tense game. Justin Tavares ‘25 got things started with a goal on the opening drive, followed shortly by Brayden Lahey ‘25, who doubled the lead. But Choate answered with a four-goal run to go up 4-2. Deerfield responded in the second quarter, with Liam Appleton ‘25 and Cooper Brozek ‘25 each notching critical goals to reclaim the lead. Brozek’s second goal of the quarter gave Big Green a 7-5 advantage heading into halftime.
The third quarter saw Choate mount a comeback, scoring three unanswered goals to take an 8-7 lead. Lahey stepped up again, tying the game at 8-8 to close out the quarter. In the fourth, Tavares pushed Deerfield ahead 9-8 with a clutch goal. Choate tied it one last time, but Lahey sealed the win with a late go-ahead goal, his third of the day, to make it 10-9.
From the first draw to the final whistle, both teams showed teamwork and determination, embodying the values of Deerfield lacrosse. With the rivalry wins behind them, the focus shifts to the next challenge. The boys hit the road on Wednesday to take on Trinity-Pawling on, while the girls travel nearby to NMH.
