Boys JV Basketball Secures Huge Win in Quadruple Overtime

It was a week of unforgettable action for the Big Green, capped by an epic showdown that had fans on the edge of their seats through four periods of overtime!

In a dramatic home showdown, Deerfield JV Boys Basketball outlasted Cushing Academy in a quadruple overtime thriller, clinching the victory on a Will Machnik ’26 three-pointer with just four seconds remaining. The game was defined by extraordinary performances, clutch moments, and relentless teamwork from start to finish. At the half, Deerfield led 29-18. Cushing adjusted well the second half forcing Deerfield to provide some critical defense. In the first overtime, Sam Peake’s ‘28 baseline drive and Hawk Okpokwasili’s ‘25 back-to-back blocks kept Deerfield in the game. A Machnik layup brought the Doors within one, and Mac Hynds ‘26 found Peake on a fast break to force a second overtime. The second overtime saw Machnik bury a banked three to give Deerfield a two-point lead, but Cushing responded to force a third extra period. In triple overtime, Rodriguez Pastor ‘28 hit a deep three to tie the game at 53-53, and after Cushing took a two-point lead, Peake and Machnik executed a sideline out of bounds play which allowed Machnik to drive and score, sending it to a fourth overtime with a buzzer-beating layup. With the game tied at 59-59 in the fourth overtime, Machnik’s clutch shooting came through. Cushing took a two-point lead with just 30 seconds to play, but Machnik found an opening and swished a three-pointer with just four seconds remaining to seal the win at 62-61.

Deerfield’s Varsity Boys Basketball team faced a tough road loss to Cushing. While they didn’t secure the win, the players showed remarkable skills and resilience throughout the game. The boys thirds team also joined varsity at Cushing where they were able to seal the win in a 60-25 defeat.

The Varsity and JV Girls Basketball teams traveled to Easthampton to face off against the Williston teams. Both squads fought hard but ultimately came up short against a strong Williston side. Despite the losses, both teams displayed excellent teamwork and communication, laying the foundation for a competitive finish to the season. The girls will return home this Saturday to take on Andover.

The girls varsity hockey team travelled to take on rival Choate. Deerfield opened with a beautiful power play by Olivia Austen ‘27 and Sophie Frost ‘26. Choate tied the score in the second, but we re-took the lead after Ava Giroux ‘26 tipped home a Brady Wierl ‘26 shot (Keira Austen ‘26 also got an assist). At home, the Varsity Boys Hockey team delivered a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Kimball Union. The win was a result of excellent teamwork, determination, and strong individual performances, earning the boys a well-deserved triumph in front of a passionate home crowd.

The boys JV hockey team continued the winning streak on the road at Williston. The game was very competitive with a 0-0 score after the first period. Both goalies rose to the challenge and kept their teams in the game. Deerfield eventually struck first in the second period with a shot by Avery Powers, his first of two for the afternoon. Williston was able to score one, but Big Green responded with another three goals before the game was over. The boys have their first home game of the season against rival Choate this Saturday!

The girls JV hockey team faced Loomis at home. While they fell to their opponent, the game was quite evenly matched and the girls won in puck possession. Goalie Liana Chen ‘25 had some huge one-on-one saves to keep the game tight.

Deerfield’s wrestling team had a competitive match against Wilbraham. The team score looks lopsided due to forfeits, but the matches wrestled were evenly split between the two schools.  Our veteran wrestlers came out and took care of business quickly, earning three first-period pins.  Congratulations to Matthew Hough, David Peirce, and Bronson Branch for pin victories.

The Big Green look forward to returning to action! For the complete schedule visit the Deerfield Athletics Schedule.
