It was an exciting weekend back from Winter Break for Big Green! The Doors were victorious on the weekend with a collective 14-5-0 record.
Deerfield varsity squash hosted Exeter for their first home match of the season in front of a great crowd! The two squads played twice during the 2023-2024 season, splitting the matches 4-3 each. This weekend both girls and boys varsity emerged with 7-0 victories. The boys also defeated Belmont Hill 7-0 and both teams will return to the courts next Saturday against Choate!
JV boys squash continued the sweep, beating Taft 9-0. They remain undefeated after big wins against Hotchkiss and Andover before winter break. JV girls squash pulled off a huge win against Taft, going 7-3. Taft was triumphant last year, but both of our teams have come a long way and were thrilled to be victorious this year!
The boys’ thirds squash team triumphed over Bement School in an exciting 7-2 win, despite having to adapt to unexpected challenges. With their number two player sidelined due to injury, each member of the team had to step up and compete one position higher than usual. The players met the challenge head-on, showcasing resilience and adaptability across the board.
Girls varsity hockey faced Lawrenceville in a matinee match at home. They started slowly, and Lawrenceville got on the board first on the power play. The girls fought back and scored the next two goals of the period. Jillian Limb ’28 scored (the first of her DA career) off of a Brady Wierl ’26 face off win, and the second from Sophie Frost ’26 off of a great give-and-go with Wierl. Allie Correri ’25 doubled the lead early in the second period on a nice individual effort, and then Ava Giroux ’26 scored an incredibly gritty goal, taking a hard shot from Frost in the gut and keeping her composure long enough to fire in the rebound. Keira Austen ’26 rounded out the scoring in the third period on a breakaway, resulting in a 5-1 win!
Girls JV hockey were ramped up for their game against Cushing on Saturday. They brought the fire which led to one of the highest scoring games we’ve seen in a while. The game stayed close, and Big Green ultimately dominated, taking the win 13-10. The boys JV hockey team began their January hockey term with a long road trip to the Salisbury School in Salisbury, CT. They fell 3-0, but we had the chance to see Sawyer Johnson and first time DA goalie Jack Vergamini and make some really key saves to keep the game close.
Deerfield’ wrestling held its home opener, wrestling three matches and going 2-1 on the day. The team came into the day ready to compete hard and executed on that goal. Deerfield’s first match was a victory over Pomfret, who had previously bested Deerfield. Deerfield’s second match of the day was against a Suffield team that, despite being small in numbers, forced the wrestlers to work hard. Deerfield’s final match was against a strong and technically sound Hopkins team. Though the team wrestled hard, Hopkins was able to prevail. The wrestlers will be on the road this Wednesday against Eagle Hill School and the Hyde School.
Boys varsity basketball started their weekend strong at home on Friday, where they defeated Avon 53-49. They continued on to Saturday, but after a close game they fell to Willison 58-73. The girls varsity team traveled to Framingham, CT to play Miss Porter’s which was a really close game and lots of fun to watch. Big Green were bested 53-61 in the end.
The girls JV basketball team took on Worcester Academy at home. They held their opponent to only 14 points in their 34-14 victory. The boys JV team also had a successful weekend away. They travelled down to Northampton, where they bested Willison 46-37 in a nail-biter game. Boys’ thirds team were home for their game against Eaglebrook, where they secured a fantastic 44-28 win.
Deerfield teams will be back in action on Wednesday! Swim and Dive will return for their first meet of the new year at home against Suffield Academy.
