Athlete of the Week

Congratulations to the first Athlete of the Week award recipient for the 2016-2017 academic year, Norm Therien, Athletic Stockroom!

Athlete of the Week Award description:

In recognition of outstanding team play the “athlete of the week award” is given by coaches at every interscholastic level to a player or players on their teams whose effort and desire to be a contributor has made a difference to their teammates throughout the week. Unlike most recognition awards these nominations represent much more than personal achievement. At Deerfield we look for and value the unsung contributor playing an important role on teams. Good teams have depth and talent. Great teams have the same and players willing to take on new roles and support others for the greater good. Receiving this award demonstrates great character, a willingness to put others first, and valuable contributions to the success of their team in ways we don’t usually describe. They lead by example and encourage us all to work a little harder at what we do.

To learn a little bit more about Norm, please read the Q & A below;

How long have your worked at Deerfield? When did you start?

I started at Deerfield on December 1st, 1974 and will have been working at the school for 42 years this December. I remember my first day on the job, I handed out hockey equipment to what seemed like thousands of hockey players. We handed out everything from helmets to skates. It was a hectic first day!

Have you always had the same role at Deerfield?

I have always had the same job, but it has changed considerably over the years. In 40 years, I have worked for 6 different Athletic Directors, 4 Heads of School, and been a part of Deerfield’s movement to co-education. I remember issuing equipment for 4 football teams and 300 boys playing soccer in the fall. That was a lot of uniforms to issue!

Why have you worked at Deerfield for so long?

I drive to my job every day and love what I am doing! That’s very special to me. My car turns right off of route 5/10 in to the north entrance of Old Deerfield automatically and it knows its home. Every day is not the same and that’s what makes every day exciting. I enjoy seeing the students, and meeting new people on campus.

What do you do over the summer months?

The summer is busy. I reassign lockers, polish the trophies and add the name plates of the year’s winners to each trophy. I inventory our equipment and gear. I help out with visiting summer camps using the athletic facilities. I lend a hand to restock the athletic store. And best of all, I get to prepare for the return of our students and the start of fall sports.

What’s the most exciting time of year?

Game days. I want our Deerfield teams to do well! My window is always buzzing with excitement on game days. And, the beginning of each term is always special because you get to hear about the outlook for each team’s season. My most cherished time of year is Reunion weekend. I love to see all the alumni back on campus.

Why do you love coming to work every day?

I value that love doing my job. Every day of the week is different. There are challenging days and there are smooth days – they are all good days. I love knowing how students are doing in the classroom and on the field. I have so much respect for all of our students and it is important to me to know how they are doing as people. So I guess you could say, I care about our students. Some of my dearest moments are sharing words of wisdom with students to help them achieve their aspirations. The days when I get to see the next generation of Deerfield families at Deerfield are special days. It is special to watch former students bring back their sons and daughters to campus as students.

What’s your most memorable memory at Deerfield?

Most recently, the boys varsity hockey game beating Choate in overtime last season! That was special. Then, the football bowl game at Deerfield when we defeated Hotchkiss. It was a windy day – the wind was stiff and straight out of the north. It was cold with snow flurries in the air, the sky was dark and gray. The Deerfield win warmed everyone’s heart!

Words wisdom for Deerfield students…

Work hard and value every day at Deerfield. Each student here has been given a great opportunity, others wish to be a part of this institution. Make the most of your time at Deerfield! Go Big Green!
