Deerfield Teams Go Undefeated Against Choate

Carly Barbato – April 17, 2018

Deerfield teams went undefeated against rival Choate in Saturday’s athletic contests at home and on the road.  Saturday’s final Deerfield-Choate tally was 4-0-1.

Seven different players scored to propel girls varsity lacrosse to a 16-8 win over the Wild Boars.  Varsity softball jumped ahead to an early lead to seal their 9-6 victory.  Boys varsity lacrosse rounded out the varsity wins with an 10-9 OT thriller in Wallingford.  Also on the day, boys JV lacrosse earned a decisive 14-4 victory and the girls JV lacrosse team tied their game 7-7 to complete undefeated day.

Girls Varsity Lacrosse @ Choate: Win 16-8

The Big Green played well against rival Choate Rosemary Hall in Saturday’s contest.  The opening minutes of the game felt balanced as the scoring went back and forth and landed in a 3-3 tie early in the half.  As the 2nd quarter unfolded, however, Deerfield pulled forward steadily and never looked back.  Midfield passing sequences were on point for the Big Green, and crisp ball movement in the attacking zone echoed this execution in the midfield.   Our defensive pressure and goalie saves proved consistent and on par with the ferocity of previous contests and often resulted in positive turnovers. Scoring was distributed amongst 7 players.  Overall, it was a well-played game and a strong team win.  The Captains named Mimi Pastor as the Give More Player of the Day for her explosiveness in the midfield and enthusiastic willingness to play any position on the field.

Varsity Softball vs. Choate: Win 9-6

Varsity Softball took an early 4-0 lead against Choate. The Boars fought back and tied up in the game in the 4th inning. Thanks to a double from Kat Hioe in the 5th, the Doors retook the lead and held it the entire game. Again, it was a great team win with clutch hitting from Kat, Meaghan O’Brien, Jordan Manning and Suzy Mazur. Meaghan was great on the mound. She struck out 12 and didn’t walk anyone.

Boys Varsity Lacrosse @ Choate: Win 10-9 OT

It was on overtime thriller! In a back-and-forth contest, the Big Green and Wild Boars exchanged goals throughout the first three quarters of play.  The Doors found themselves down by 2 goals in the final minute of regulation.  Nick Pecora ’20 made a big-time save with less than a minute to play to regain possession for the Big Green.  Jack Bill ’19 made it a one-goal game with 28 seconds left on the clock.  Ethan Barnard ’19 won the ensuing face-off and Bill recorded the equalizer to level the score at 9-9 at the end of regulation to force overtime.  Again, Barnard won the face-off to kick-off OT and Bill completed the hat-trick when he notched the game-winner in the extra session to secure the victory for Deerfield, 10-9.

Go Big Green!
